Happy Friday everyone!

Just a few announcements and information for you as we prepare for another week full of learning and hard work!!!

Headphones/Earbuds: As part of the 2018-2019 school supply list, we requested that students bring in a pair of headphones or earbuds to use in school. We will begin using these supplies on an almost daily basis, and it is so very important that your child be prepared. I only have a couple of extra headphones in my room - just in case. Please ensure that your child has their headphones or earbuds ready for school use next week.

STAR Reading & Math Reports: I sent home the most recent assessment reports on Tuesday of this week. Please review the information, sign both forms, and send them back to me. Once I have received them, I will review any comments or questions you may have, and return the reports back to you to keep with the August and October reports from earlier in the year. We have seen a lot of growth on both assessments and I expect to see even more in February!

Pacers Tickets: MEC participates in the Pacers Tickets fundraiser every year. A portion of every ticket sold helps our school earn money. This money can be used to fund projects and initiatives for students and staff at MEC. Your child brought home the order form the week before winter break. Please consider purchasing discounted tickets for your family or asking friends, family members, or coworkers to purchase tickets as well. The MEC night is Tuesday, March 5th where the Pacers will face the Chicago Bulls. It should be a night full of fun and excitment. Thank you for supporting MEC!

Semester Academic Awards: 5th grade students will be honored for their hard work and dedication to their academics on Friday, January 18th from 7:00-7:30am in the cafeteria. If your child has been on the High Honor Roll (All A's) or the Honor Roll (A's and B's) for BOTH the 1st and 2nd quarter, they will receive an invitiation to the breakfast ceremony - these will be sent home on Monday, January 14th. If your child earned the Globe Trotter Award for either the 1st or 2nd quarter, they will also receive an invitiation the breakfast ceremony on Monday. Be on the lookout!

Report Cards are LIVE!: Reports cards went live today for the 2nd quarter. Please check your Skyward account to view thier grades and report card comments. Students can log into their Skyward student account by logging in via the www.ltschool.org single sign on portal to view their report card if you do not have a parent account already set in place.

Late/Missing Assginments: This quarter, I will begin instituting a new "late work" ploicy. If your child has any assignments that are turned in more than a week late, they will begin to lose points on those assignments. I expect students to complete their work on time, however, I understand that sometimes this does not happen. Thus, students will be given one week to get all late or mising assignments completed and turned in to be graded before points will be deducted from their final score.

Missing Assgnments: This quarter I will also strive to send home notices every, or every other week, with a list of assignments that are missing from your child's gradebook.  This is new for me, so although I am aiming to do this every week, it may be an unrealistic goal! I will do my best to send them home on a weekly basis.

Homework Policy (Updated): This quarter, homework will only be sent home if your child has late, missing, or incomplete classwork to finish. If your child has all of his/her assignments completed and turned in, they will not have any homework for the night. There will be a few times, every so often, that I will send something home for students to work on, but it will be more along the lines of an activity connected to Second Steps (anti-bullying program), an interview to be done with a family members, and so on. If you really want your child to do homework every night, they can always get on Khan Academy, practice multiplication and division facts, listen to you read aloud, or read independently or to siblings.

I think that's it! Let me know if you have any questions about the enclosed information.

PS - I forgot to email out this week's newsletter. You can view it HERE. I did however, send a hard copy home, along with the MEC calendar for the 2nd semster in your child's blue folder.

Have a great weekend - I hope you go outside and play in the snow!!!!
